Windsor police warn of wannabe cops’ scam phone calls
Windsor police are warning residents of a telephone scam that attempts to dupe people into believing it’s the police calling.
“Please be aware that telephone scammers are posing as Windsor Police officers in hopes of obtaining money and personal information,” officials said in a statement.
Police said scammers are using caller ID spoofing — intentionally changing the information sent to a caller ID display to hide their identity — to pretend the call is coming from Windsor police.
Officials said the scammers often attempt to intimidate or pressure people into sending money or sensitive, personal information.
The scammers tell victims they face some sort of penalty and an arrest warrant will be issued if they fail to transfer large sums of money, police said, adding that it’s important to remain calm and not fall prey to fear tactics or intimidation.
Hang up and contact the Windsor police non-emergency line at 519-258-8501 to verify the caller’s authenticity.
If there is suspicion the call was a scam, report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
In addition, police advise to never send money or share personal information over the phone. Police will never demand payment or sensitive information this way.
