OWEN SOUND – Ontario Provincial Police have charged a 17-year-old following what they’re calling a hate-motivated incident on a school bus.

According to a statement from South Bruce OPP, officers responded to reports of an altercation between two students on a school bus at about 4:45 p.m. on Nov. 20, last Wednesday.
Police said they learned a person had an “edged weapon” and used racial slurs toward the victim.

The 17-year-old, whose identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is charged with assault, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon, uttering threats, intimidation and public incitement of hatred.
“The OPP does not tolerate or condone acts of hate against a person or property based on race, national or ethnic origin, language, colour, religion or religious dress, sex, age, mental or physical disability, or sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression” police said in a statement. “These grounds are referenced in the Criminal Code of Canada and the Ontario Human Rights Code.”

Man, 53, charged after crash
A 53-year-old from St. Marys is charged after Ontario Provincial Police say they arrested an impaired driver following a single-vehicle collision.
Police say it was about 9:45 p.m. on Nov. 23, last Saturday, when officers were called to the scene of a crash on Cobble Hills Road in Thames Centre, northeast of Thorndale. There were no injuries, police said.
The man from St. Marys is facing three charges, including impaired driving. He was released from custody and is scheduled to next appear in court on Jan. 7.
