Cat killed, damage pegged at $200K after fire at London home

One cat is dead, and another one was rescued, after a house fire at a home in London’s south end on Sunday afternoon caused $200,000 damage, London Fire Department officials say.

London firefighters and emergency crews responded to a blaze in the 400 block of Alston Road, near Nixon Avenue and Southdale Road East in the White Oaks neighbourhood, at about 12:22 p.m. Sunday.

Fire crews arrived to see smoke billowing out of a ground-floor window and began to extinguish the flames.

Two cats were rescued by firefighters, but one died following unsuccessful resuscitation efforts, the fire department said in a post on social media. Fire officials did not immediately release the cause of the blaze on Sunday.

Two people have been displaced from the home, which sustained $200,000 in damage.

Three hurt in Brantford-area crash

One person was airlifted to hospital, and two others were injured, after a two-car crash south of Brantford Saturday afternoon, provincial police said.

Police and emergency services, including Ornge air ambulance, were called to a crash involving an SUV and pickup truck at Villa Nova Road and Concession 2 Townsend at about at 12:38 p.m. Saturday, Norfolk County OPP said in a news release Sunday.

Two people in the SUV were taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, OPP said. The driver of the pickup truck was airlifted to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Villa Nova Road and Concession 2 Townsend, a rural crossing that is controlled by a stop sign on Concession 2 Townsend, were closed for about six hours for the police investigation.
