If there’s a time of year when beer fans can “barley” contain their enthusiasm, this is it.
Brewers are ripping open bags of barley and pushing hop-forward beers to the background in favour of stouts.
At Powerhouse Brewing at 100 Kellogg Lane in London, they’re into the spirit of things with a new brew, Solstice Porter. At the brewery, Solstice is $3.50 a can.
No one does Christmas better than London Brewing where elite beers suitable for gifting have just been released.

The quartet of beers based on London Brewing’s 4PM Sunset Oatmeal Stout are Irish Cream, Chile Chocolate, Chai Latte and Chocolate Orange.
You can have a 500 ml bottle of each along with a bottle of barrel-aged Baltic porter in a Holiday Stout Series five-pack for $35.35 at the brewery.
In Sarnia and at LCBO stores, Imperial City’s Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Stout is back.
Seasonal dark beers aren’t limited to stouts and porters. In Russeldale, Black Donnellys Brewing has a new Belgian quad. Shillelagh Law is 8 per cent alcohol.
And at Neustadt Springs, the chill is tamed by the short-term return of Neustadt Schwarzbier, a smooth dark lager.
NEW AND NOTED
There’s a four-pack of Christmas beers at Broken Rail Brewing in St. Marys. Rebel Without a Claus is a lager with candy canes and peppermint extract. Resting Grinch Face is a cranberry wheat beer. Sleigh My Name, Sleigh My Name is a citrusy pale ale with subtle chocolate sweetness. Let’s Get Elf-ed Up is an 8.2 per cent strong beer with added ginger and season-celebrating spices of cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg.
At Forked River in London, LimeBerry IPA is back. The aroma is of Swedish berries candy and the flavour is tart lime. LimeBerry is six per cent alcohol.
