The fundraising arm of St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital is getting a $50,000 donation to a campaign launched earlier this year from a company with ties to the city.
Masco Canada Limited, which deals in bathroom products and water solutions, announced a $50,000 gift to support the hospital foundation’s $8-million push to bring what officials called “long-awaited MRI technology and associated care” closer to residents.

“Supporting our communities is incredibly important to us,” Masco Canada’s president, Lindsay Barber, said in a statement, “and with so many of our employees living right here in St. Thomas and the surrounding area, we’re proud to help bring this important care closer for all families that might need it.”
Masco employs about 600 people in St. Thomas, a company official said.
According to the company’s statement, the hospital’s emergency department is “often the second busiest in the southwest region,” and many patients who visit require diagnostic imaging tests or procedures.
The Free Press previously reported the hospital performs about 80,000 diagnostic imaging tests or procedures annually, and nearly every patient requires some form of imaging exam.
The fundraising campaign aims to remove the need for patients and their families to travel outside the community by leading to speedier diagnoses, faster treatment access, improved recovery times and shorter hospital stays.
The fundraising foundation’s president and CEO, Mary Lou Crowley, called Masco Canada “a true philanthropic leader” in the community, adding its support reflects “our shared philosophy of excellence in health care close to home.”
As of Oct. 7, the campaign had reached 94 per cent of its $8 million target, according to the foundation’s website.
