OPP offer new details in ‘high-risk’ London takedown

A Hamilton man arrested in a “high-risk” takedown across the street from London police headquarters is charged with forcible confinement, provincial police say.

Officers responded to a reported disturbance in a vehicle on Hjghway 401 West about 10:30 a.m. Monday, Middlesex OPP said Tuesday.

“The OPP received a call from passengers in a vehicle that was travelling through our area,” Middlesex OPP spokesperson Jeff Hare said by email. “The vehicle was subsequently located by our officers, and it was stopped in the London area.”

Officers conducted a high-risk traffic stop at Adelaide and Dundas streets, where London police helped arrest a suspect, police said. Nobody was injured.

“There was no pursuit of this vehicle,” Hare said.

Ontario law lets police pursue a fleeing vehicle if a crime has been or is about to be committed, but the need to protect public safety must outweigh any possible public risks from the pursuit.

A Hamilton man, 49, is charged with forcible confinement and dangerous driving. He was remanded in custody pending a court appearance.

Joe O’Neil, a funeral home operator and amateur photographer, went to the scene after his father alerted him to the heavy police presence.

At least nine police vehicles surrounded a blue sedan, which was eventually loaded onto a flatbed truck, said O’Neil, who posted photos to social media.

Man charged with assault causing bodily harm

A suspect sought after a man was hurt in clash with five men has been arrested, Chatham-Kent police say.

A man suffered serious injuries in an altercation with five other men June 30, police said. Five suspects were identified.

Officers responding to a reported disturbance involving a large group near A.D. Shadd Road in North Buxton about 11:15 p.m. Saturday arrested a person on a warrant in relation to the June 30 incident, police said.

The North Buxton man, 28, is charged with assault causing bodily harm, police said. He was released with a court date.
