Residents warned to close windows as railway ties burn

Railway ties on a bridge that crosses a creek near Wallaceburg burned in a fire Tuesday afternoon that sent plumes of smoke into the air that could be seen  many kilometres away.

Flames were nearly two metres high and black smoke was coming from the railroad ties when fire crews arrived at about 1 p.m., Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue said.

The wooden rail bridge that crosses over Running Creek outside of Wallaceburg is on an abandoned stretch of line.

Firefighters advised residents to close their windows and doors as a precaution to limit exposure to toxic smoke in a post on X.

A tanker from Tupperville was brought in, and firefighters used portable pumps to douse the burning railway ties, Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue said.

The Ministry of the Environment was notified and the cause of the fire is undetermined, the department said.
