A London police officer won’t face criminal charges after a man suffered a broken nose during an arrest earlier this year, Ontario’s police watchdog says.

A police officer followed a vehicle after it was seen speeding on the morning of May 26, the Special Investigations Unit said. After the vehicle stopped, the officer asked the 43-year-old driver for identification, the SIU said.

While the officer was conducting a check of the driver’s name, the 43-year-old ran off, the SIU said.

According to the SIU report, the officer along with another officer chased the man and arrested him after a struggle.

The man who attempted to flee was later treated at hospital for a broken nose, the SIU said.

After assessing the evidence, SIU director Joseph Martino announced there were “no reasonable grounds to believe that an officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the man’s arrest and injury,” the report said.

The SIU is a civilian agency that probes all cases of serious injury, death, police-involved shootings and allegations of sexual assault involving police officers across the province.

Rainfall warning issued for London

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for London, advising that heavy rain could start on Tuesday night and continue into Wednesday.

The warning covers London, Parkhill and parts of eastern Middlesex County. The national weather agency is projecting that a total of 45 millimetres of rain could fall. The rain is expected to continue Wednesday morning, Environment Canada officials say, but will “ease off in intensity.”

Flash floods and water pooling on roads is possible, Environment Canada officials said.
