An officer on patrol on Talbot Street early Saturday found a man on a bicycle that had committed several Highway Traffic Act infractions, St. Thomas police said in a news release.
The officer attempted a traffic stop, but the cyclist kept going, police said. The officer, driving beside the suspect, demanded the cyclist identify himself, before the man hopped off the bicycle and ran away.

The officer caught up with the suspect, who continued to decline to identify himself, police said. The suspect gave a false name and false birthdate, police said. The officer attempted to place the man under arrest for failure to identify himself under the Highway Traffic Act, police said.
“While the officer attempted to place the male into custody, he became actively resistant – refusing to provide his hands to be handcuffed and he kept one of his hands concealed and held to his body,” police said.
“While the officer physically struggled with the accused to effect the arrest the male blurted out several threats to the officer and indicated that he had a knife. The male brought out his concealed hand holding what appeared to be a long metal object. The male pointed the object towards the officer and said he would stab him.”
The officer let go of the suspect, who ran off. Officers pursued the man and deployed a conductive energy weapon to subdue him, police said.
The man, whose name and age were not released by St. Thomas police, is charged with resisting arrest, obstructing a peace officer, assault with a weapon, uttering threats, failing to comply with release order and two Highway Traffic Act offences.
