Airshow London returns to the skies above the city this weekend. LFP reporter Beatriz Baleeiro looks ahead to the nearly sold-out show, running Friday through Sunday at London International Airport, and what new and different aspects fans can expect at the 2024 edition.

NEW AND DIFFERENT

Besides the classic performances – the RCAF’s Snowbirds demonstration squadron and CF-18 fighter jet – special guests will be on hand to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of Canada’s air force.

For the first time, the U.K. Royal Air Force aerobatic team, the Red Arrows, will join the event Saturday and Sunday, shooting white, red and blue smoke in a half-hour performance.

On Friday, a drone “symphony in the sky” is set to wow crowds. On Saturday, the U.S. army Golden Knights parachute team will make their London debut, showing off their parachuting skills with demonstrations and competitions.

A bigger-than-ever ground display will give plane fans a chance to see dozens of aircraft. A new area, the “Falcon’s Nest,” will feature F-16 Fighting Falcons from various U.S. bases, a nod to the fighter jet’s 50th anniversary.

On Sunday, the Red Arrows’ support aircraft, a giant Airbus Military A400M Atlas turboprop transport, will wrap up the event with a farewell flyby before heading back home to the U.K.

An app with everything you need to know to get around the event is available. It tells you what to bring, what not to bring, directions and performance schedules. Listening to the show’s sound system – also available via the app – on the radio or your phone is highly recommended, officials say, to stay up-to-date with what’s happening through the weekend. The app is formally called Airshow London SkyDrive 2024 in the app store on your smartphone.

HOW IT WORKS
