A 44-year-old London man faces numerous charges in connection with what the Hamilton police financial crimes unit calls an extensive auto fraud and identity theft investigation.

Police say it was March when they started investigating fraudulent vehicle purchases involving stolen identities.

Police say a man working in sales at a dealership used his position to fraudulently buy 14 high-end vehicles between November 2023 and March 2024, resulting in more than $1.5 million in losses for the dealership and financial institutions.

Police say the victims of the identity theft were unaware that loans had been taken out in their names to finance the vehicles. Most of the vehicles have been exported out of the country or re-registered with new VIN numbers, police said.

Only one vehicle has been recovered so far, police said.

Shelton Mark Gregouire is charged with 14 counts of fraud over $5,000, four counts of fraud under $5,000, 23 counts of identity theft, 14 counts of obtaining credit by fraud, nine counts of attempted credit by fraud, and 23 counts of uttering forged documents.

Hamilton police say the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact Det. Angela Abrams at 905-546-4603. Those wishing to provide information anonymously can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or submit tips online at crimestoppershamilton.com.
