Evan Hillock had a quiet first game in Ottawa. He roared back in Western’s home opener.

The fourth-year quarterback went 18-for-23 for 281 yards and threw four touchdowns in a 71-3 pounding of the Waterloo Warriors before 7,500 Sunday night at Western Alumni Stadium.

The Mustangs scored 10 touchdowns to improve to 2-0 this season and win their 22nd consecutive Ontario university football regular season game. Veteran receivers Mohsen Jamal II and Seth Robertson each scored twice in the blowout.

Short-yardage quarterback Jerome Rancourt racked up two rushing touchdowns while Keon Edwards (nine carries, 73 yards), Ethan Dolby (8 carries, 79 yards), Marcell Phillips (seven carries, 52 yards) and Keanu Yazbeck (five carries, 31 yards) also found the end zone.

Linebacker Max Nixon led Western with seven tackles and two sacks while Chris Cameron-Kogler and Richard Aduboffour recorded interceptions. The Mustangs already have five picks through two games this season.

Yazbeck and Edwards, Western’s two top running backs, have recovered from injuries suffered last season form a one-two punch that makes the Mustangs a Vanier Cup contender. In an interview last week, Coach Greg Marshall praised their abilities.

“They are certainly game-changers,” Marshall said. “They both do different things. Keon can bang it in there and has some good moves. Keanu has breakaway speed. It’s good having that one-two punch. That’s been the history of our running backs here. There’s nobody who says I’ve got to get my carries. Both got 100 yards. Guys run unselfish and it’s been that way for a long time.

Western (2-0) will face Carleton, already 0-2 after losses to Guelph and Windsor, Saturday, 5 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
