Residents at area retirement home lose $50K in frauds: OPP

Several people at a retirement home in Norwich have lost more than $50,000 in frauds, Ontario Provincial Police say.

Police were notified Aug. 21 of an alleged fraud at the home in the community about 20 kilometres southeast of Woodstock, police said Tuesday.

The initial investigation determined multiple people were defrauded and a suspect has been identified, police said. The Oxford OPP major crime unit is helping in the investigation.

Anyone with information is asked call Oxford OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Police also are appealing for people to call them if they suspect someone they know may have been defrauded to call them.

Man suffers burns after setting Windsor backyard deck on fire

A 40-year-old man has been charged with arson after the back deck of a downtown home was set on fire.

Windsor police responded to a report of a disturbance Sunday around 4 p.m. on Janette Avenue.

They found a man sitting on the grass, suffering from severe burns.

Police said there had been a verbal altercation between the injured man and occupants of a home on Caron Avenue.

After the argument became physical, it is alleged the man poured gasoline on the backyard deck and then set fire to the gas-soaked wood.

The suspect fled on foot before officers located him on Janette Avenue.

The man was taken to hospital. Police said his injuries were non-life-threatening.

The suspect has been charged with arson with disregard for human life and arson causing damage to property.
