Weather may have played a role in a London Transit bus crash that sent several passengers to hospital, city police say.

It was about 9:30 a.m. on rain-soaked Sunday morning when London police announced officers were responding to a single-vehicle collision that resulted in a bus crashing into the grass median between the north and south lanes of Highbury Avenue, near Commissioners Road East, in the city’s east end.

The investigation was ongoing as of Monday, police said.

“With respect to the cause of the crash, it appears that the weather played a factor,” London police Const. Matt Dawson wrote in response to Free Press questions. “However, I am unsure as the investigation remains ongoing if there are any other factors that played a part in the collision.”

Dawson said police didn’t have an update about the extent of injuries suffered by passengers who were on the bus at the time of the collision but noted “some passengers had received minor injuries requiring medical attention.” CTV London reported there were six people aboard.

London Transit general manager Kelly Paleczny was unavailable for comment on Monday but another official with the organization issued a statement about the crash.

“The London Transit Commission deeply regrets the collision that occurred on Sunday that sent many people to the hospital,” it read. “In addition to fully cooperating with the London Police Services in their investigation, an internal investigation is also underway.”

Officials with Amalgamated Transit Union Local 741, the union representing London Transit drivers, did not reply to a Free Press request for comment.
