Officers are seeking a driver who went through a stop sign, evaded police and stole a vehicle after running away when their car got stuck in a field mid-getaway early Sunday, Aylmer police say.
An officer saw a silver Honda Civic go through a stop sign at Sydenham Street West and John Street South in the Elgin County town at about 1:20 a.m., Aylmer police said in a statement issued on Monday.

The officer followed and tried to pull over the vehicle, which accelerated to the back of a private property on Talbot Line, drove into a field and got stuck, police said.
The driver ran off, and despite “best efforts,” including help from an Ontario Provincial Police dog team, couldn’t be found, police said.
Investigators believe that the person who ran off is responsible for the subsequent theft of a vehicle.
Police said the investigation was ongoing as of Monday morning. Anyone with information was asked to call Aylmer police at 519-773-3144 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
Youths sought after train vandalism
Ontario Provincial Police in Elgin County are asking for the public’s help after they say “a group of five youths” was spotted damaging a pair of rail cars.
Police say officers were called at about 8 p.m. on Aug. 16 to an address on Fruit Ridge Line between Sunset Road and Mellor Road in Central Elgin after getting a report of the damage being done. That’s located in a rural area between St. Thomas and Port Stanley.
Police told The Free Press the damage included broken windows but nothing to suggest operation of the rail cars could be affected.
Officers weren’t able to find the suspects, police said. They’re described as three males and two females and were last seen walking east on Fruit Ridge Line. Anyone with information is asked to call Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
