Try bright lights
Regarding the article Deadly summer for motorcyclists (Aug. 8).
I got one of the first motorcycle licences way back in 1966 when they were introduced and have ridden motorcycles for years. During that time, I have seen a dramatic increase in deaths and I think I might know the reason.
Back then, cars did not have air conditioning and people drove with their windows down so they could actually hear bikes. Today, with their windows up, air conditioning on and stereos playing, drivers can’t hear bikes anymore.

So what’s the solution? Bright, oscillating headlights might reduce the incidents.

Freezing may help
Regarding the letter Maggots dilemma (Aug. 10).
The letter writer is concerned about regular garbage that sits for two weeks, owing to the new biweekly pickup schedule, attracting maggots.
My understanding has been that with the introduction of green bins, no food items should go in the garbage. Meat/bones, vegetable scraps, dairy items, everything of that maggot-attracting nature should go either into home compost (vegetable scraps) or a biodegradable plastic bag or brown paper bag for the green bins, for weekly pickup.
To be sure, this can be questionable during hot weather spells if these items sit in the green bin for a week. I find it helpful to have a designated container and spot in the fridge or freezer to store such waste in until I put out the green bin.

Thanks to the French government, people and thousands of volunteers who welcomed visitors to France.
Thanks to the athletes who took our minds off the troubles in the world to focus on sportsmanship and camaraderie for two weeks.
Thanks to the Canadian Olympic Committee who helped our athletes to fulfil their dreams to compete at the Olympics.
Thanks to CBC-TV, who aired the games in real time so we could share what our athletes were experiencing.
Amazing that in 1944, 80 years ago, Paris was liberated from Nazi occupation.
Sad that the Olympics have ended, but now can we can look forward to the Para Olympics Aug. 28.

Thanks, Olympians
Thank you Canadian Olympians who represented our nation with such distinction.
You’re our children who through years of tireless training and dedication have once again awakened Canadian pride that’s been torn apart in recent years
Just watching your efforts and seeing those straining bodies looking for success says it all I hope your efforts will inspire Canada’s youths so they realize anything is possible and through hard work they could be part of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics
