Thank you, London

As I step into retirement, I want to express my profound thanks to the London community.

I have been on an incredible journey for the last 26 years with London Hydro. My heart is filled with gratitude for our customers and the community which accorded me this incredible opportunity.

It has been an honour and privilege to serve as London Hydro’s chief executive since 2009 and to work alongside such a dedicated and talented team at London Hydro.

I am immensely proud of the London Hydro team for all we’ve achieved together. The challenges we faced, successes and failures, the safety milestones we celebrated, support to the community during the pandemic, and continually striving to provide reliable electricity to our community, they are all woven into the fabric of our collective success of London Hydro and the community.

None of it would be possible without the support of our customers and community partners.

I am grateful for the London Hydro board members, past and present, community partners and civic leaders who have helped me, guided me and cheered for me.

Thank you again for your support, love and partnership. Wishing all a future filled with prosperity, happiness and blessings.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Vinay Sharma, chief executive, London Hydro

Maggots dilemma

Regular garbage is only picked up every two weeks. Therefore, it has become an attractive summer destination for maggots and fruit flies. The flies can fly off to other resorts, but not the maggots. Would it be OK to deposit them in my green bin on the weeks I don’t have my regular pickup?

Need better solution

Some other cities are picking garbage up weekly and recyclable items are picked up every two weeks. Do you think this would’ve been a better solution for us? We do not need our city to become infested with rats.

City hall needs to rethink what they are doing with our garbage situation. I don’t believe this is working with our best interest in mind.

After another property tax hike all I seem to be getting is less services and a very stinky situation.

Try for peace

It is a pleasure to watch athletes from around the world competing at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Their amazing feats in the air, water and on the track seem effortless but have taken years of practice to perfect. Athletes’ dedication to their sport should be an example to all world leaders that through hard work and effort a lasting peace worldwide can be won.

Regarding the article Prison for stolen pickup driver who killed woman going home from work (Aug. 7)

I am surprised the judge sentenced a man with a long criminal record who killed a woman in the act of committing a crime to only six years in jail. A death caused while committing a crime warrants a far longer sentence. This person compounded the crime by attempting to get away.

I hope the Crown will attempt to get the sentence extended.

Leave tenants be

Regarding the article ‘Cash-for-keys’ offers fuel fear (July 24)

A new landlord bought the building and decided to upgrade the building at the expense the people who have been living there for a long time.

The tenants were quite contented, but the new landlord knows he can update and charge higher rents.

But is it needed? His current tenants are, presumably, quite comfortable with how they are living. So, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Be seen, be safe

Regarding Deadly summer for motorcyclists (Aug 8.) Since motorcycles are much smaller than cars, visibility is a big factor. As a fellow motorcyclist, I urge all motorcycle riders to drive with high beams on during daylight hours. Your bike will be a least two times more visible to oncoming cars. Be seen and not at the scene.

Grits try comedy

It’s nice to see the struggling Liberal party is taking a stab at comedy.

They have appointed Steven MacKinnon as their standup comedian, who starts us off with a zinger: New minister selling Liberals as the party of fiscal prudence (Aug. 7). I had tears in my eyes from that one and then he tops it off with, “I see my party winning the election.”

This guy is hilarious. We all could use a good laugh to keep our minds off the monumental mess this government has put this country in.

Good luck to Mr. MacKinnon in his new gig. He’s going to need it.
