A search was continuing Friday in north London for a missing girl last seen Thursday afternoon in the Thames River.

Early Friday, London police said they’re continuing to monitor the river after searching riverbanks overnight with spotlights looking for the girl as searchers scouring the surface of the river paused those efforts Thursday night after darkness fell.

Emergency crews were returning to the river at daybreak, with police warning the water remains high and fast-moving and to leave search efforts to emergency crews equipped with the appropriate safety gear.

“More information will continue to be provided as appropriate,” said Const. Matt Dawson, a London police spokesperson.

Searchers are looking for a girl under age 10, who was last seen in the Thames near Adelaide Street North and Kipps Lane.

London police and the London fire department, along with volunteers and dive teams from Waterloo Region police and the OPP, combed the river late Thursday afternoon into the evening.

A district fire chief with the London fire department told The London Free Press Thursday evening that the operation had become a search/recovery mission.

“It was a search,” Jeff Johnston said. “Now it’s . . . search/recovery now. There’s no chance of survival past 20 minutes in this warm water.”

First responders expect the water level to be lower Friday, as the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority has closed its dam at the Fanshawe Conservation Area to reduce the volume of water in the river to make it easier for searchers trying to locate the girl.
