Dajana Lukic was overcome with emotion hearing about all the ways, both large and small, her brother touched people’s lives.

One man described how Darko Lukic would give him a cigarette and listen to him during his darkest days.

A woman recalled how Lukic was always kind to her young children.

These were just a few of the anecdotes residents at 122 Base Line Rd. shared with Dajana Lukic Thursday night at a candlelight vigil for her 48-year-old brother, who died in hospital after he was found critically injured near the affordable housing building on July 20.

London police said he had been assaulted.

“I’m in shock. I’m in disbelief. I can’t believe he’s gone,” Dajana Lukic, 32, told the crowd of around two dozen people gathered outside the Base Line Road apartment building.

Police are investigating Lukic’s death as a homicide – the city’s fifth of the year – but no suspects have been arrested.

“I pray for peace and prosecution, of course, and I hope we can all hold each other’s hands and just get through this,” Dajana Lukic said. “Take care of one another . . . And pray that something like this doesn’t happen ever again.”

The group presented Dajana Lukic with a card of condolences and a gift before planting a hydrangea tree in Lukic’s memory and releasing balloons into the sky as the sun set.

“I didn’t really realize how loved Darko was until his visitation, until today,” said Jason Wall, one of several people who spoke at the vigil.

Marnie Lougheed, who lived across the hall from Lukic on the second floor of the geared-to-income building, organized the vigil.

“I needed some closure and I’m sure some other people did as well,” she said.

Third-floor resident Terry Vuylsteke previously told The Free Press he saw two men pushing an unconscious Lukic from the building around 8:15 a.m. on July 20.

The men pushed the children’s wagon Lukic was lying face-up in into a neighbouring townhouse complex and out of sight before an ambulance arrived about 15 minutes later, he said.
