Growing Concerns: Gardens likely due for some nutrients

There is so much colour in the garden right now. Even lawns are still a brilliant green. All the rain we have had has made this an amazing gardening year.

July is the perfect time to take a bit of a break from our gardens and visit other gardens. The Gardens Ontario website has a list of garden tours that horticultural societies plan throughout the province. I enjoy visiting some of the gardens that cities maintain such as Springbank Park.

Another great thing about July is the pop-up parking lot garden centres that offer big discounts. This is where I find great deals on fertilizers and other plant supplies. If the fertilizer or chemicals are kept dry they can last for years.

Because we are not having to water our gardens, we probably have not fertilized lately. I hook my sprayer up to my hose and give all my plants something to eat. I use a 20-20-20 fertilizer.

Take time to sit back and enjoy the fruits of your hard work. Invite some friends over and share your passion and maybe a plant or two.

I spent last weekend journaling about my garden. I made notes about what I want to change in the fall and what I want to do differently next spring.

Gardening is a journey not a destination. We will never be finished because as gardeners we are always dreaming, planning and changing.
