The Strathroy Rockets have been sold to former NHLer Cory Conacher.

The Burlington native, 34, played 193 regular season games with the Lightning, Senators, Sabres and Islanders. He suited up last season with the American league’s Chicago Wolves and also has spent time overseas in the Swiss league.

“I’m super excited to take on this chapter with a junior team and make a positive impact on the community,” he said.

Andrew Ferlatte has been named team GM, replacing former owner Kent Coleman. Jason Williams, entering his fifth year with the Rockets, will remain as head coach.

“We would like to thank Kent Coleman, the team’s former president and director of hockey operations, for his many years of hard work and dedication to the Rockets and the GOJHL,” said Tim Simmon, the league’s interim commissioner.

“We are thrilled to add a new owner with Cory’s resume and experience to the GOJHL and wish him all the best in this new chapter of his hockey career.”

MAT STARS: Local wrestlers Treye Trotman, Gavin Eldridge and Jonelle Clarke produced strong results at the inaugural U23 Pan American championships in Rionegro, Colombia, recently.

Trotman brought home a freestyle silver medal in the 57-kilogram class, while Eldridge was third in Greco-Roman (67 kg) and Clarke was fourth in women’s 65 kg freestyle. They were the only three London-area athletes selected for Canada’s 18-member squad.

Wrestling Canada’s high-performance director Chris Woodcroft called the international experience a valuable stepping stone for the world under-23 championships held in the fall.
