Accused in hit-and-run faces prior charges in 2022 assault

A man charged in a hit-and-run crash that seriously injured a pedestrian is set to go to trial next month for an assault in 2022, court records show.

London police asked the public for help earlier this week following a collision Sunday night in the intersection of Oxford Street and Wonderland Road involving a white van and a pedestrian who was seriously injured and remains in hospital four days later. The driver of the van left the scene, police said.

Kasem Sultan, 22, of London was arrested Tuesday and charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident causing bodily harm. He’s additionally charged with two offences under the Highway Traffic Act: careless driving causing bodily harm and driving without a licence.

Sultan was granted bail Wednesday after pledging to pay $1,000 and agreeing to a list of release conditions that include reporting to the John Howard Society, not communicating with the victim and potential witnesses and not possessing any weapons, according to court documents. The case returns to court on July 23.

Court records show Sultan was already on another undertaking – a document created by either a court or police that places the charged person under certain conditions – related to an alleged attack on Sept. 10, 2022, that led to charges of assault causing bodily harm and aggravated assault. Sultan and his co-accused, a 23-year-old man who is charged with assaulting the same person, are scheduled to begin a three-day trial to be held on July 15, Oct. 9 and Oct. 21.

The man injured in Sunday’s crash remains in hospital and was listed in fair condition Thursday, a London Health Sciences Centre spokesperson said.
