A 41-year-old man is charged with setting fire to a recreational vehicle in Windsor in an attempt to evade police.

Officers arrived in the 700 block of Bridge Avenue just after 11:30 p.m. Sunday to arrest a suspect wanted on multiple outstanding warrants, police said.

Police said the man refused to exit a parked RV. They obtained a warrant and attempted to enter the trailer. But the suspect allegedly lit a fire that quickly engulfed the inside of the vehicle and spread to hydro lines above the trailer, police said.

As officers dealt with the fire, the suspect escaped through a small opening in the floor of the recreational vehicle and fled the scene. A search of the neighbourhood ended when officers found the suspect hiding in a home in the same block.

A man was arrested on outstanding warrants for charges of break and enter and theft of a motor vehicle and three counts of driving while prohibited. He also faces a charge of arson with disregard for human life and arson causing property damage.
