Police are asking the public for help to identify the owner of an urn containing ashes that was recovered from the St. Clair River near Sarnia.

Officers with the Lambton County Ontario Provincial Police detachment were called in January to a home in the 600-block of St. Clair Parkway in St. Clair Township, south of Sarnia, and were handed a small urn that had been recovered from the water, police say.

The only identifying marks on the urn is a tag bearing the words: Belton-Stroup Funeral Home, Ohio, police said.

Attempts to locate and identify the owner of the urn have been unsuccessful, police said.

Tyler Sylvester is a funeral director at Belton-Stroup, located in Fairborn, Ohio. He said he hadn’t heard about the discovered urn, but stated that their standard practice after cremation is to include a coin with a unique cremation number, as well as a laminated tag with identifying information of the deceased.

An exception to this practice is when ashes are split between multiple “keepsake urns,” he said.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding the urn to contact Lambton OPP at 519-882-1011 or 1-888-310-1122.

Police have charged a 36-year-old Brantford man after recovering more than $150,000 worth of construction tools and equipment at a West Street property.

Police raided on the property on June 12. They say the equipment, which was reported stolen on June 11 after a break-in at a construction site in a nearby community, was returned to the owner.

Among the items were a towable power generator, a trailer, and various construction tools and equipment.

The accused is charged with break and enter, theft over $5,000 and possession of stolen goods over $5,000. In addition, he had three outstanding warrants and was held for a bail hearing, police said.
