The London region is in for several days of hot, sticky weather next week with daytime highs of 33 C or higher.

The Middlesex-London Health Unit said Friday it anticipates Environment Canada will issue an extended heat warning beginning on Monday.

“We’re sending some advance notice because it possible that (the federal agency) . . . will issue the extended heat warning on Monday,” said David Pavletic, the unit’s food safety and health hazards manager.

There are precautions people can take, Pavletic said, including “if you are outdoors, try not to over exert yourself.

“Seek shade and try and stay hydrated as much as you can,” he said. “There are locations within the city to go for cooling centres.”

And make sure to check in on family and friends “who may be more vulnerable to the heat,” Pavletic said. “Make sure they doing OK and staying cool.”

Highs are expected to hit 33 C on Monday, 34 C on Tuesday and Wednesday and 33 C on Thursday with a mix of sun and cloud each day. Lows will be in the lower 20s C.

Sunny skies are expected this weekend, with forecast highs of 24 C on Saturday and 29 C on Sunday.

Environment Canada issues a heat warning when forecasts call for a daytime high of 31 C or higher and a forecast low of 20 C or higher, or a humidex of 40 or higher, for two consecutive days.

The health unit will provide an update when it becomes available.
