Impaired charges after passed-out driver, 3-year-old found in running vehicle

A man is charged with impaired driving after Ontario Provincial Police were called over reports of an unconscious driver alongside a three-year-old child in a parked vehicle near St. Thomas.

Police say it was shortly after 9:30 p.m. on Friday when officers were called to Sparta Line east of Centennial Road, where they found a driver in a vehicle with its engine running, Elgin OPP say. He showed signs of intoxication and was arrested, police said.

A three-year-old was also in the vehicle, police said. The Children’s Aid Society of Oxford County arranged to have a family member pick up the child, police said.

While in custody at the St. Thomas police station, police say the driver assaulted a police officer and refused to provide a breath sample.

A 25-year-old Woodstock man is charged with impaired driving and failure to comply with a demand, police say.

One arrested, two sought in armed robbery

One suspect is in custody and two others remained at large following an armed robbery in Simcoe.

Norfolk OPP responded to the report of a robbery at a Norfolk Street South home at about 11:30 p.m. on Sunday. Police say three people arrived at the home just before 10:30 p.m. and had a conflict with a person inside the home.

The person was assaulted with an edged weapon and was later taken to hospital with serious injuries, police said.  The suspects fled on foot, taking with them some of the person’s property, police said.

Just before midnight, officers saw two people walking on Queen Street North in Simcoe. One fled, while the other suspect – who matched the description given – remained and was arrested.
