A new program at the library in Owen Sound will allow visitors to put their green thumbs to use after thumbing the pages of their favourite novella.

The Grey County Master Gardeners will be at the Owen Sound and North Grey Union Public Library every third Tuesday of the month for their Gardener in Residence program.
The program kicks off at the library on Tuesday (June 18) from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on the main level, where a gardening demo will be followed by a drop-in advice clinic. Registration is suggested for the 2 p.m. gardening demo, with the drop-in clinic to follow at 2:30 p.m.
The June event is all about planting native, where the master gardeners will educate attendees about why it is important to plant native species and how they can improve biodiversity.
Participants can discover tips for incorporating native plants into their existing garden and understand the role native plants have in the ecosystem while providing habitat and food for many creatures, it said in a news release from the City of Owen Sound.

The Grey County Master Gardeners Gardener in Residence program at libraries in the county was introduced to provide outreach for all members of the community on horticultural matters.
Master gardeners in Ontario are experienced gardeners who have studied horticulture extensively and continue to upgrade their skills through technical training, the release said.
With their training and continuing education, master gardeners provide expert horticultural advice to the general public.
Future Gardeners in Residence programs will be held at the Owen Sound library on July 16, Aug. 20, Sept. 17, Oct. 15 and Nov. 19 from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
