The London Devilettes have produced another Professional Women’s Hockey League first-rounder.

Julia Gosling was selected sixth overall by the Toronto franchise in the second edition of the league draft, held Monday night. Ingersoll native Ella Shelton was the fourth-overall pick by New York in the inaugural draft last year.

Gosling, a Londoner, decided to turn pro after scoring 22 goals and 51 points in 37 games while serving as captain of St. Lawrence University in her fourth year of NCAA eligibility this past season. The 23-year-old forward scored twice for Canada in the recent women’s world championships, including a goal in the gold-medal game against the United States.

“I’m super excited to get started and just be near my hometown,” Gosling said in a video posted to social media. “I’m excited to meet all the fans and start this upcoming year.”
She will add more offensive punch to a Toronto club that finished first in the regular season but struggled to score against eventual champion Minnesota in the opening round of the playoffs.

Shelton finished fifth in PWHL scoring and led all defenders this past season with seven goals and 21 points in 24 games. The 26-year-old’s individual brilliance couldn’t help sixth-place New York win enough to qualify for the post-season.

The Big Apple squad selected Team Canada star Sarah Fillier of Princeton with the first-overall pick Monday. The native of Georgetown, who was named tournament MVP of the 2023 women’s world hockey championship, was the favourite to be the No. 1 overall pick.

Only the recent hire of long-time Colgate head coach Greg Fargo by PWHL New York had some suggesting he might influence his new team to take a face a little more familiar to him in Edmonton native and Fillier’s Canadian national team teammate Danielle Serdachny, who spent five years at Colgate. In the end, New York opted to stay with Fillier.
