SPORTS BRIEFS: Under-19 N’Stars impress in Burlington

BAYSOX SWEEP DOUBLEHEADER
The Owen Sound Baysox won both games over the Orillia Majors in a Saturday doubleheader at Tom Williams Park. In game one, the Baysox won 6-3, following the victory up with an 11-5 win later that afternoon. Strong pitching performances and six home runs helped fuel the Baysox. The Scenic City’s Sunday afternoon game scheduled against the Bolton Brewers was postponed due to rain. A make-up game will be scheduled. The Owen Sound Baysox are now on top of the table in the North Dufferin Baseball League with a record of 7-2-1. The Baysox host the Mansfield Cubs on June 20 at Tom Williams Park with the first pitch scheduled for 8 p.m.

U19 N’STARS WIN TWO IN BURLINGTON
The Owen Sound Krueger Steel North Stars under-19 girls had another great weekend, this time at Sherwood Forest Park in Burlington where they secured two big wins and improved their record to 4-2. First up, a 14-2 win against the Toronto Beaches 2 squad. Ryann Seaman led the way with four goals, followed by Hannah Davies with three goals, Mya Good with two goals and singles from Ella McCoubrey, Charlotte Fox, Willow Smith-Spinney, Leah Sundermeier and Aliviah McCall. Assists came from Aliviah McCall (3), Noelle Brewster (2), Lauren Neil, Ryann Seaman, Ainsley Smith, Michelle Kocher, Shaelynn McKee and Megan Cowan. Next, an 11-4 win against Kawartha with Ryann Seaman scoring three goals, Michelle Kocher, Katie Marshall and Mya Good with two goals each, and Leah Sundermeier and Ainsley Smith with one goal each. Assists came from Shaelynn McKee (5), Hannah Davies, Charlotte Fox, and Ainsley Smith.

U15 N’STARS KEEP ROLLING
The Owen Sound Creative Playgrounds North Stars under-15 squad continued their strong play to start the 2024 season with convincing wins over Burlington and Orangeville this past weekend. In game one the North Stars took a couple of quarters to get going but when they did they were hard to stop. Strong work by McKenna Ward in the offensive zone, along with some smart play-making by Avery Thompson, helped London Doyle and Camryn Laycock combine for 11 goals, while Leah Cooper, Avery Seaman and Ella Todd chipped in to complete the scoring and secure a 15-7 win. Game two saw strong mid-field mild work by Ava Ward and Leah Cooper, while defensively; Jenna Cranny, Scarlett Stevenson and Caitlin Tran, along with goalie, Callie Sarvis, once again, locked down the opposition. Offensively it was a complete team approach with a 17-4 win. Goals were scored by Addison McCoubrey, Lily Shute, Ella Todd, London Doyle, Camryn Laycock, Scarlett Stevenson, Caitlin Tran and Avery Seaman. Next week the North Stars head to Oshawa.

U11 N’STARS SHINE BRIGHT
The Owen Sound Transcontinental North Stars under-11 team had a fantastic victory against the Oakville Ladyhawks this past weekend, with a final score of 13-10. Clara Patterson, Aubrey Walker and Lexy Bothwell were exceptional on the defensive side demonstrating teamwork and determination which led the ball up to the mid-fielders, Ireland Grimstead, Mila Minard, Harper Thompson, Norah Given and Sophie Burnett-Scott. The attackers, Heidi Singh, Meyer Quaid and Evelyn Scholl were able to clear space to allow goals scored by Mila Minard (10), Sophie Burnett-Scott, Meyer Quaid and Clara Patterson. Isla Nickel had a remarkable performance in net. After the game, the girls had an opportunity to watch the Team Canada under-22 team practice, specifically Owen Sound’s own Jillian Goldie. The girls got high fives from the players and headed off to their next game. The girls faced a tough challenge against the hometown team, Burlington Blaze, and lost with a score of 17-6. N’Stars Goals were scored by Harper Thompson, Sophie Burnett Scott and Mila Minard (4). The North Stars look to bounce back in St Catharines on June 23.
