Obituary – Margaret Schwichtenberg

MARGARET SCHWICHTENBERG
Sept. 20, 1937 – Jan. 20, 2024

Margaret Schwichtenberg, of Tiverton, passed away on Jan. 20, 2024, in her 87th year at the Huron Shores Hospice, surrounded by her family, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Left to mourn Marg’s passing is her best friend of 65 years, her husband Alfred; her daughter Kathryn Young (Brian); her grandchildren Brandie Bernard (Steve) and Ryan Young (Kaitlyn), and great-grandchildren Colton, Kaydence, Nash, & Kensington, all of Kincardine.
Also missed by brother Jack Cassidy (Shirley) and sister Betty Graham, all of Newcastle, England; Al’s sisters Betty Wybenga (New York) and Verna Lynette (Fonthill), and sister-in-law Marge Schwichtenberg (Port Elgin).
Marg’s closest friends, Sue Maltais (Tiverton) and Faerlene Nickel (Tara), supported and comforted her until the end.
There are many nieces and nephews in Canada, United States, and United Kingdom, who will miss their Aunt Marg’s mischievous sense of humour, her beautiful singing voice, and her endless optimism.
Marg was born in Newcastle, England in 1937. She immigrated to Canada in 1956. She first settled in Wingham, where she worked as nanny for the Hanna kids during the day and switchboard operator (Bell Girl) on the night shift. In spring of 1958, she met the love of her life, Alfred Schwichtenberg from Mildmay. They married in October of 1958. Al & Marg relocated to Penetanguishene in 1964 where they opened their business, Almar Printing and produced the Penetang Citizen (a weekly newspaper). They relocated to Tiverton in 1976 and spent the rest of their life together, working, traveling, reading, and appreciating the nature surrounding them (from birds to bears and all the other wildlife who shared their property).
Family brought Marg the most joy and every moment spent with her family, especially the children, she cherished.
She was predeceased by her mother Elizabeth Lumsden in 1942, her stepmother Mary Theodorakis in 1970, and her father Hugh Cassidy in 1976; Cassidy siblings Rose, Ethel, Hughie and Jenny; Rooney siblings Lily Harrison (Albert), Margaret Hanna (John), Barney Rooney (Doris), Molly Perrott (Gordon), Kathleen Forsyth (Bill), Joseph Rooney (Irene); her Schwichtenberg parents Fred and Tilly and in-laws George Wybenga, Jack Lynette, Wib Schwichtenberg, Audrey and Fred Weigel; her nephews Dennie Cronin, John Hanna, John Perrott, Ron Steffen, Andrew Perrott, Michael Hanna; and great-granddaughter Blayre Cassidy Bernard.
There will be a private family graveside service in the spring.
Marg’s family would like to thank everyone who helped with her medical care this past year: Dr. Murray, Dr. Sandu, Dr. Parpria, Dr. Gunaratne, the Kincardine hospital team, Beth and the entire team from Home & Community Care Support Services, PSW support from Rural Home Care, and the incredible staff and volunteers at Huron Shores Hospice, who made her end-of-life journey as comfortable as possible.
If you would like to donate in Marg’s memory, may we suggest Huron Shores Hospice, MS Canada, Diabetes Canada, or the Kincardine Food Bank.
