The President and CEO of South Bruce Grey Health Centre has announced he will not be renewing his contract in the spring.
A release sent out from the hospital network’s board of directors Monday evening stated that Michael Barrett has elected to step away from his position. His current contract expires on March 31, 2023.
“Michael has provided over four years of outstanding leadership to SBGHC through some very difficult times, especially during the COVID pandemic, and the current crisis associated with the province-wide shortage of health human resources,” said Bill Heikkila, Chair of the board for SBGHC. “His extensive experience, along with his collaboration and communications skills, have advanced health care at SBGHC and throughout the region. He has also been a strong voice for rural health care at provincial tables.”
Heikkila added that the board was hoping to renew his contract, however Barrett informed them of his desire to be closer to his family in London.
“I have been living away from home during the week for over four years now, and the time has come for me to be closer to home throughout the entire week. I care deeply about the staff, physicians, and board, and have appreciated all of their support throughout my time with SBGHC,” said Barrett.
The board said it has now begun the recruitment process for a new President and CEO. It hopes to have the position filled in time to allow a suitable overlap ahead of Barrett’s departure. Barrett said he is committed to working with the board to ensure a smooth position for the future President and CEO.
