If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck …

There was a time when “spin,” used as a verb, involved turning fibre into yarn. These days, tops spin, figure skaters spin, and so do political “fixers” whose job it is to make something negative sound positive – or vice versa. While the latter use of the word may seem a bit odd, there is also more than one definition of the word “yarn.” Used not in the fibre context, but to mean a long, rambling, implausible story, it
makes a certain kind of sense. (By Pauline Kerr)
