Homes, businesses evacuated after crash damages gas line

Several homes and businesses in east London had to be evacuated after a gas line was damaged in a crash.

A vehicle hit a home and gas meter on Highbury Avenue near Calvin Street just after 10 a.m. on Monday.

Emergency crews immediately responded to the area, blocking off a section of the busy street between Hamilton Road and Trafalgar Street.

No one was hurt, but nearby homes and businesses were evacuated as a precaution, according to the London Fire Department. London Transit provided a bus to shelter those who were forced to leave their homes during the incident. Additionally, London Transit had to detour Route 10 around the closure.

Enbridge Gas crews were called to shut off the line and assess the damage. London Hydro was also on scene.

As of noon, Highbury between Hamilton and Trafalgar remained closed with the public being asked to continue to avoid the area until further notice.
