As the spring thaw and recent heavy rain has rivers and creeks higher and faster moving than normal, a local conservation authority is looking to make residents west of London water-wise.
The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority is offering a river and creek safety program this Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the Longwoods Road Conservation Area.
“This family-friendly afternoon is designed to provide young community members with the skills and knowledge they need to help them make wise decisions about their safety around rivers, creeks, and lakes,” the conservation authority said in a statement.
The program will begin with a short presentation by conservation staff before shifting to more interactive activities. Participants will be given practical tips, a cold-water experience, a chance to try on a personal flotation device, and will go on a trail walk to learn about potential dangers like ice, slippery banks, swift and cold waters.
The program is supported by the Mount Brydges Optimist Club, the Rodney Lions Club, the Optimist Club of West Lorne, and Salus Mutual.
Anyone interested in participating is asked to meet at the Longwoods Road Conservation Area Resource Centre / Ska-Nah-Doht Museum.
