Tips for a safe St. Patrick’s Day in London

With St. Patrick’s Day falling on a Friday this year, London is bracing for a weekend of celebrations across the city, and local organizations are offering some tips to keep party-goers safe and sound.

Being home to two major post-secondary schools, the Irish holiday has been known to cause a ruckus in the city as groups of revelers often hit the streets before noon in search of green beer and good times.

In an effort to keep the public safe, there will be an increased police presence throughout London on Friday. Laws regarding open liquor, underage drinking, and city by-law offences will be enforced, according to the London Police Service (LPS). Officers will also ensure streets remain accessible to vehicles at all times.

While police said they want members of the public to enjoy themselves this weekend, they ask that celebrants do so in a responsible manner.

“Our approach will be strict but fair,” a police spokesperson added. “We ask Londoners to be safe, be smart, and be respectful.”

The London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) also advised crowds to be careful over the weekend, as the holiday tends to leave the hospital with a busy emergency department.

“St. Patrick’s Day is often associated with alcohol consumption, which can increase the likelihood and severity of injuries,” said LHSC Injury Prevention Specialist Jennifer Britton. “It is important to pace yourself and take an extra second to consider the potential consequences associated with an activity or situation to reduce your chances of ending up in the emergency department this year.”

When heading out for the day or night, LHSC recommends planning ahead by designating a sober driver and always having back-up money for a cab or rideshare. Those who anticipate walking around town are reminded to use sidewalks, crosswalks, and to avoid railway tracks to protect themselves from moving vehicles.

The hospital also shared some tips for safe alcohol consumption. Pacing yourself, drinking water in between alcoholic beverages, and eating regularly throughout the day will help limit the effects of alcohol – on the day of the festivities, and the day after.

Since impairment can lead folks to make risky decisions, LHSC reminds the public to think about the consequences of their choices and watch out for friends throughout the day.
