Charges have been laid against a London man accused of crashing his vehicle and threatening another driver before allegedly assaulting and attempting to disarm a police officer.
The bizarre chain of events began when London police received three separate 911 calls about a suspected impaired driver Wednesday night. A blue SUV was spotted speeding down the sidewalk along Andover Drive near Blackthorn Crescent around 7:55 p.m. The SUV hit a fire hydrant and a street sign. It finally came to a stop after hitting a third undisclosed object on Andover.
The male driver got out of the vehicle and allegedly threatened another driver who had been following him. The man drove off before returning to the scene where he then tried to steal the concerned driver’s vehicle.
When police arrived, the man allegedly tried to lock himself inside his vehicle to avoid arrest. He continued to resist arrest and “repeatedly” attempted to take an officer’s gun from its holster during the struggle. The officer was bit multiple times by the suspect’s dog before other officers arrived and the man was finally taken into custody.
The officer suffered minor injuries from the dog.
A 36-year-old London man is charged with nine offences including impaired driving, disarming a peace officer, assaulting a peace officer, resisting arrest, robbery with violence or threats, failure to comply with release order, dangerous driving, failure to report an accident, and failure to remain at the scene of an accident.
The man is scheduled to appear in London court on Thursday.
