Wingham ER closure extended to 9 a.m. Sunday

A scheduled closure at the Wingham and District Hospital emergency department has been extended.

The urgent care unit will now be shut down from Saturday at 3 p.m. until Sunday at 9 a.m.

Originally, the ER was supposed to re-open at 7 a.m.

Barb Major-McEwan from the Listowel Wingham Hospitals Alliance confirmed that nursing shortages are once again to blame for the closure.

Anyone requiring emergency medical care in the area is asked to call 911. Ambulances will be re-routed to nearby hospitals.

There are a number of alternative facilities in the vicinity including Listowel, Clinton, Goderich, Palmerston, and more. However, before travelling out of town, it is best to contact hospitals ahead of time to ensure their emergency rooms are accepting patients.
