Public school board holding Black Community Engagement Session

The Thames Valley District School Board (TVDSB) is inviting Black-identifying members of the community to come and share their experiences, build new relationships, and enjoy a complimentary dinner at an event later this month.

The Black Community Engagement Session will be held on Wednesday, February 22 at Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m.

This is the third community engagement session TVDSB has put on this school year, according to Rheba Moore-Nash, the board’s system principal of equity & inclusive education. They hosted an engagement event for the Muslim community in October 2022, followed by a November session for 2SLGBTQIA+-identifying individuals.

“What we have heard from families is that these events have made them feel incredibly affirmed – and that word is a direct quote from one of the family members who came to our first session,” said Moore-Nash.

The purpose of the Black Community Engagement Session is to forge stronger connections between the school board and Black students, their families, and other members of the community.
While each of these engagement sessions have been geared towards a distinct group of people, there is one shared goal at play – creating more equitable outcomes for TVDSB students regardless of their identity.

“It’s an opportunity for us to listen and learn about their experiences, their ideas, their thoughts, and at the end we get to share a meal together, which is wonderful,” Moore-Nash added.

TVDSB confirms that this event is free-of-charge.
