After a serious collision involving three vehicles, a man from Aylmer and the business he works for are facing a number of charges.
On Tuesday afternoon, Wellington County OPP say they were called to a three-vehicle crash in the area of Wellington Road 7 and Wellington Road 12 in Mapleton. According to police, the collision involved a tractor trailer carrying a load of logs, an SUV with one person inside, and a mini van with seven occupants.
The driver of the SUV was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported.
A nearby home was damaged as a result of the collision, police said. Debris from the crash damaged two vehicles at the residence, along with a large propane tank. The lawn of the home also wrecked and residents’ hydro services were reportedly disrupted.
Following the investigation, a 23-year-old Aylmer man is facing a dozen charges in relation to the incident, including careless driving, operating a defective commercial vehicle, and driving for longer than legally allowed in one day.
In addition, the business that owns the commercial vehicle is charged with allowing a driver to go over the allotted shift time, failing to ensure performance standards were met, and failing to equip the vehicle with mandatory items such as proof of insurance, a valid permit, and an electronic logging device, which tracks driving time in commercial vehicles.
According to the government of Ontario, the maximum time a person can drive a commercial vehicle is 13 hours per day. The government also mandates that a driver should have at least 10 hours of off-duty time per day.
