While community spread of COVID-19 appears to be decreasing, the virus continues to claim lives in the London region.
The Middlesex London Health Unit confirmed Tuesday that two men in their 70s and 80s and a woman in her 90s succumbed to the virus over the past week. There have now been 236 COVID-19 deaths reported in the region this year and 494 since the pandemic began.
There have been 137 new COVID-19 cases confirmed by the health unit since it last updated its COVID-19 dashboard last Tuesday. However, public health officials caution that single-day case numbers are an underestimate of community spread due to eligibility changes that limit who can receive a test. The area’s total case count since March 202 stands at 46,112.
The number of active cases locally decreased to 282 in the last week.
The health unit’s next scheduled COVID-19 update will be next Tuesday.
The London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) reported it has 40 patients with the virus in its care. That is a decrease of 18 since last week. According to hospital officials, just eight of the current inpatients are being treated for the virus, while the remaining 32 are being treated for other ailments but have tested positive for COVID.
The intensive care unit has five or fewer infected patients. There are also five or fewer patients with COVID-19 at Children’s Hospital, but none are listed in paediatric critical care.
The number of hospital workers who have tested positive is currently at 25, down three since last week.
There is just one level two COVID-19 outbreak at the LHSC. It is listed on Victoria Hospital’s B7 200 PICU Adult Mental Health unit.
