Huron county council touts broadband internet expansion

The CAO of Huron County says the previous county council can be proud of the work it did to expand broadband internet coverage.

Meighan Wark said each new council sets priorities based on the needs of the communities, and four years ago council identified a number of projects that it wanted to focus on, including broadband internet access. According to Wark, council worked collaboratively with the local telecommunication companies, Western Wardens Caucus, with got financial contributions from the federal and provincial governments.

“We saw an increase in fibre-based internet in Huron County that has gone from 15 per cent underserved to, by the end of 2023, only three percent of Huron County will be underserved,” said Wark.

Wark said council can be justifiably proud.

“It is a huge achievement and it is something that was years in the making and certainly through the vision and the commitment of this council and partner agencies, it certainly is successful,” she said.
