Theft and Fraud: Awareness and Prevention webinar next week

Victim Services Huron County will host a webinar aimed at helping people avoid becoming victims of theft and fraud.

The webinar, called ‘Theft and Fraud: Awareness and Prevention’ will be held Thursday, October 27 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Executive Director Deb Logue says they will looking at various scams that can trick anyone.

“It’s always about trying to access money,” explained Logue. “So whether its your credit card has been compromised — ‘Call us back!’ — and they take advantage of that piece or there’s potentially Romeo scenarios [where] you have sent pictures that are then used against you as blackmail to get money that way.”

They initially were going to aim the webinar at seniors but noticed the type of scams and victims were evolving.

“When we first started developing it, it was gearing more towards our elders because of the grandparents scam [that was] quite predominate,” explained Logue. “But that has mitigated and changed and now we’re seeing other types like the Romeo, the out of country — ‘Send me some money to come here I’m just looking for love.’ [The] other lures and hooks that get into people that are vulnerable.”

“There’s just a variety of different ways and different things that we’re seeing and we just really wanted to bring awareness to what a scam looks like, how to identify it as a scam and then how to combat it so you don’t get taken advantage of,” Logue said.
