Residents on a London street have been allowed to return home after a gas leak shut things down Wednesday.
London police say emergency crews were called shortly before 1 p.m. to Central Avenue between Adelaide Street North and Pall Mall Street on a report of a natural gas odour. Residents were then asked to evacuate.
For several hours, London fire crews monitored air quality in the area while Enbridge Gas worked to identify the source of the leak and stop it.
London Hydro also said about a thousand customers in the surrounding area had their hydro shut off as a precaution. London Transit buses were also put in the adjoining safe zone to provide shelter for residents who were displaced.

The gas was shut off around 6 p.m. and London Fire crews began leaving the scene. Residents were then allowed to return home, and as of 6:30 p.m., crews were preparing to restore hydro service.
The exact location of the leak and the cause were not immediately disclosed.
