Elgin resident assaulted after confronting car thief

A homeowner in Elgin County was hurt after confronting a man attempting to steal a truck from their property.

According to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), a man attended a residence on Sunset Road in Central Elgin at around 6:40 p.m. Monday and got into a pickup truck parked on the property.

Police say the suspect damaged the ignition in an attempt to start the vehicle, which grabbed the homeowner’s attention. The owner went outside to confront the stranger, which resulted in a verbal confrontation.

The accused allegedly assaulted the owner with a weapon before taking off to an awaiting white GMC pickup truck which was last seen heading northbound on Sunset Road at a high rate of speed.

The owner suffered minor injuries during the assault.

Investigators say the suspect is described as an Indigenous man, around 6’2, with dark hair between 25-30 years old.
