Friday last day candidates can file to run in the municipal election

Time is running out for Londoners contemplating a run for municipal office to make it official.

Nomination papers for those running for mayor, ward councillor, or school board trustee have to be filed with the Elections Office on the second floor of London City Hall by 2 p.m. Friday.

In addition to paying a filing fee, candidates have to submit a form with the signatures of 25 eligible voters who endorse the nomination before it can be accepted. Nomination papers have to be filed in-person as there is no online option.

Currently, there are eight people running for mayor, including current deputy mayor Josh Morgan. Earlier this month, he received an endorsement from outgoing mayor Ed Holder and is viewed as the favourite in the race which includes former Liberal MPP Khalil Ramal.

The race in five wards (3, 4, 5, 7, and 11) are considered wide-open as the respective incumbents are not seeking reelection.

The full list of candidates can be found on the City of London website.

With the nomination period coming to a close, recruitment of staff to work the election will be getting underway. The election office is planning to host job fairs on August 24 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the following locations:

East Lions Community Centre
Startech.com (Bostwick) Community Centre
South London Community Centre
Medway Community Centre

Available positions include deputy returning officers, registration officers, and tabulator operators. In order to be considered,  applicants must be 18 or older, legally entitled to work in Canada, and cannot be a candidate, campaigning for a candidate or have provided an endorsement signature to a candidate. Those interested in a position should come prepared for a brief on-the-spot interview, the elections office said.

The municipal vote is slated for October 24.
