A single-vehicle crash east of Woodstock has claimed the life of a motorcyclist.
Emergency crews were called to the crash on Highway 53 just west of Middle Townline Road just before 8:30 p.m. on Sunday.
The motorcyclist lost control on a bend and collided with a hydro pole. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man’s name has not yet been released.
Brant County OPP closed Highway 53 between Middle Townline Road and Lawrence Road for several hours while they investigated the cause of the collision. The road was reopened early Monday morning.
There has been a “very alarming” increase in the number of fatal crashes involving motorcyclists in southwestern Ontario this year, according to West Region OPP.
At the end of July, OPP held a news conference to urge motorcyclists to be more cautious on the roads. At the time, Inspector Shawn Johnson said there had been 12 fatal collisions involving motorcycles on OPP patrolled roads in the west region, up from seven deaths over the same time period last year.
