The City of London is taking a look at the current rules surrounding fireworks and wants public feedback.
Fireworks By-law PW11 determines what day and time residents of London are able to set off fireworks and even what type you’re able to buy.
Currently, the by-law permits the use of low-hazard fireworks only on Victoria Day and Canada Day between dusk and 11 p.m. with two exceptions:
• Residents can obtain a permit for firework use on special occasions, such as weddings, or Council can permit other dates through a By-law.
• Canada Day always falls on the first day of July as opposed to Monday, like most statutory holidays, and people often want to celebrate on a weekend. Therefore, when the holiday falls on a Monday or Tuesday fireworks are allowed on the Saturday before Canada Day, when it falls on a Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, fireworks are permitted on the Saturday following Canada Day.
Low hazard, or consumer fireworks, are common fireworks that the general public can buy and use in residential areas.
City staff want public feedback to understand what the community would like to see in the updated By-law. The survey can be found here and is available until September.
