Middlesex resident out $100K in crypto investment scam

A Middlesex County resident has lost $100,000 after falling victim to a phoney crypto currency investor.

The investment scam was reported to OPP late Monday morning.

Police have determined the victim met an individual online who claimed to be a financial investor, specializing in crypto currency. The victim gave the fake investor the large sum of cash, only to realize after that it was a scam.

The investigation is ongoing.

In an effort to prevent others from being defrauded, police are urging the public to always verify any unsolicited requests before responding or providing personal information.

“If you feel pressured, hang up the phone or delete the sender’s profile,” police said.

Anyone who believes they have been a victim of fraud can call police at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS). More information about new and ongoing scams in the country can be found through the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at www.antifraudcentre.ca.
