Perth East will host an upcoming Candidate Information Session for potential candidates interested in running in this fall’s municipal elections.
The free event is on Wednesday, April 6th at 7:00 p.m.
The event is open to any resident of St. Marys, Stratford or Perth County who is interested in running in the 2022 Municipal or School Board Trustee elections.
Eric Bell is the Acting Municipal Clerk for Perth East and says members of the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing will be part of the discussion.
“They will kind of give a high level review of the role of municipal staff, some of the nomination processes and key dates, some candidate eligibility and duties, as well as some campaign rules, finances, compliance audits, some information of third party advertising, stuff like that that they’ll need to know.”
Bell says the session will be available on Zoom, and in person participants will be welcomed at the Perth East Recreation Complex at 40 Temperance Street in Milverton, with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. on April 6th.
He also notes most municipal websites have information for voters and interested candidates. The Town of St. Marys, City of Stratford, Municipality of North Perth, Township of Perth East, Township of Perth South and Municipality of West Perth are partnering to host the session.
Bell says part of it will include a presentation called “So You Want To Run For Council.”
“So that will cover anything from roles and responsibilities of council and staff, the public’s role in local government, difference between governance and administration, municipal conflict of interest and other responsibilities, and impact on family life.”
