Conservatives to elect new leader in September

The Conservative Party of Canada will have a new leader in September.

According to a report by the Toronto Starthe party says its leadership election committee has set a date for the race.

Candidates will have until April 19, 2022, to enter the campaign.

Those interested in running will have to dole out a total of $300,000, $100,000 of which will serve as a deposit to ensure they comply with election rules and procedures. Contenders will get their deposit back after the campaign is over.

All membership applications must be submitted by June 3 as ballots will be mailed to Conservative Party members starting in late July.

Portage-Lisgar, Manitoba MP Candice Bergen currently serves as the federal Tories’ interim leader, after former leader Erin O’Toole was forced to resign in early February when the CPC caucus voted to oust him using the Reform Act.

O’Toole led the party for just over a year after winning the last leadership race in August 2020. His tenure as leader came to an end months after the Conservatives failed to secure a majority government during the 2021 federal election.
